Looking for some massive Techno? Then look no further than this hot new release on Canadian imprint 4Play Trax.  The sister label of Amplified Digital, 4Play has been making waves with new and up and coming Canadian producers with remixes from some of the world’s best young talent. This techno release isn’t exactly what you might typically hear on this label, but I welcome the change up with open arms.

Along with the Original Mix are techno remixes by Peppelino and a Re-work from Sadowick & SDK (Techno), while our very close friend Joran rounds things out with a banging house remix that is more techno than anything.

Another great package put together by 4Play Trax and definitely something different from their camp but still quality music for your for just about any setting, except maybe your wedding.  Or is it?  Read on past the break for high quality samples.

Just in time for WMC 2010 the boys at Bellboy Records are offering up a slice of springtime Tech-Funk with a bit of Nu-Disco sprinkled on top. Never one to be boxed into a specific genre Chris Cowie’s “X3” EP is a three tracker that has a little something for everyone.

Cowie’s first cut “3rd Degree” is a smooth four on the floor Tech-House number with large doses of funk and a springtime vibe that is perfect for the pools and beaches of Miami. If you’re tired of the winter blues “3rd Degree” is the right vehicle to get you headed into summer.

Cowie’s second entry “Disco Revenge” falls in the realm of Nu-Disco however the Cowman’s Tech-Funk vibe is stamped all over this one and it works beautifully! Great vibe, wonderful flow this Nu-Disco groover is unapologetically in a class by itself. Chris’s third offering “Sential” is for all the Bellboy massive out there that need the techier side of things no matter what time of year it is. “Sential” definitely has a springtime vibe to it but the techier lines are upfront and represented proudly with this number.

Well, as we all know very well, no classic trance tune is safe from the 2010 treatment, and it’s always a wonder how they manage to revive these and turn them into effective crowd pleasers….but time and time again, they do.  Don’t get me wrong, often times they don’t, and this latest package does!

Marco V teamed up with Benjamin Bates way back in 1998 to release Luvstruck under the Southside Spinners guise. It was their only track together under that moniker, and for the past few years it seemed the track had been finally laid to rest as a defining trance classic of the late 90s.  It turns out this wasn’t what the gents had in mind and in 2010 they’ve recruited a fresh batch of producers to rework the monster into a beast.

In this 6 remix pack are reworks from Marco V himself, Cliff Coenraad, Benny Royal, Filthy Rich, My Digital Enemy and Prok & Fitch.  Marco’s version is undoudtedly Marco V a la 2010.  Cliff’s version is MASSIVE beyond beliefe and steals the show. The other versions are utter garbage, wavering somewhere between confused tech house and confused electro.

Previewed just this week by Ferry Corsten and Armin van Buuren on their respective radio shows, this smashing track is the latest in Sander’s arsenal of club destroying tunes. With a title like Daisy, I’ll have to assume this is in relation to his appearance at the Electric Daisy Carnival in California this past summer (a festival where our very own Aaron attended!).

This track is once again a progressive melting pot of tech house, trance and electro fused together to create a rather surprisingly well balanced and homogeneous audio experience. If you’d like to get a sneak peek at the track, he’s posted a solid 3 minute sample of this beast to his SoundCloud account. The track sees a Beatport release on Feb 16, 2010!

It is album and compilation season, and my favorite part is the slew of good stuff that streams out as a result. Mr. Sam’s Opus Tertio is one such compilation, the third of his Opus..ses…And this is the fourth sampler. You’ll find a fine lot of producers in here, from known to unknown, so read on for samples, and pick your favorite!

Mr. Sam and Andy Duguid – Tra Zomas [See post to listen to audio]

Tribal as it gets! Chuggy beats are spiked with an infusion of vocal chants and rhythm stabs. The break is a shift into a string-driven break; something epic and classical-sounding…A build and return to the beat yields stomp, and a second break ebbs and flows into the transition. If you’re a fan of either of these guys, you are sure to be pleased.

Lost Stories – Gone But Not Forgotten [See post to listen to audio]

One of our favorite duos from this year makes an appearance on the compilation, offering up that trademark silky-smooth and robust sound. We get deep vibes, male vocals, big sounds, and a lot of energy bubbling just under the surface. Give this one a few listens, you’ll pick up on something new each time.

Julius Beat – A Break In The Clouds [See post to listen to audio]

We start with a tech-house synergetic breakbeat, which before long evolves into a chuggy progressive 4->Floor fixedbeat. The break kicks out an electric guitar melody, which shunts aside for a synth-driven build. As we cruise along, that great guitar returns, making for a great head-bobbing bit of progressive. Check it out, especially if you’re feeling the winter blues at the moment!

Manuel T. – Tungusta [See post to listen to audio]

Manuel whips up a bassline driven beat, evolving from slightly dirty into something squelched, then something atmospheric. We just casually plod along, with all sorts of square leads blazing the trail ahead of us. It sounds like something that would be enjoyed by, say, Gui Boratto…But that’s just me.

Vosk – Nothing Changes (Leitzenmayer Remix) [See post to listen to audio]

The track starts with rhythm guitar licks, before being drenched with delayed synths, more guitar, and…A pinch of cello? Either way, after that point we get into warm and fuzzy land, with the track being warmly padded with synths and vocals alike. The lead is small-sounding, but works very well with the overall feel of the song. This one is for fans of Morgan Page!

Goes down like a smooth slap to the face! These tracks have a lot of pump but a lot of depth at the same time. My favorite is Julius Beat’s effort though. 8.5/10!

Ah, a Jonas Steur track. You can count on techno-prog-house-style grooves and in this case, infectious vocals…Right? Well, that’s what I’ve come to expect! What I did not expect was to see Jonas’ brother, Simon, on remix duty, but then again, I should have expected that…This should be interesting! Read on for samples, and vote for your favorite Steur…Or remix. Whatever.

Hypnotized (Original Mix) [See post to listen to audio]

Something a little more vintage! Jonas kicks out a groovy old-school house track, complete with 808-like claps, plinking piano, awesome big-room vocals and synths, and that new-school Steur beast of a beat. This one is perfect for summer hopefuls, set openers, and disco nights, where you want that fusion of techno, progressive, and vintage.

Hypnotized (Simon Steur Remix) [See post to listen to audio]

Simon follows in his brother’s footsteps, at least with regards to that rolling beat. Instead of going for the vintage vibe, Simon kicks out something that could best be described as a hybrid of organic and modern; organic in the percussion, and modern in effects usage and processing. Tiny splashes of synth make their way into the mix, but do not make any major motion until we hit the break, where synth and piano fuse and join those big vocals…We build right back into that cool groove, before heading out.

Groovy; what you would expect from the Steur family! I’m giving Simon’s take my tip, it has a nice feel and groove to it. 7.5/10.

I’m not going to lie, this review has been sitting on my back burner for months now (since july!) and I’ve been afraid to tackle it simply because it includes 22 tracks. The entire album’s size is so daunting that I’ve had to take it in, bit by bit, until I was finally able to properly voice my opinion. It appears that day has come.

The entire album spans quite a wide spectrum, everything from dubbed and tripped out tech house, deep and soulful house and some club worthy progressive bangers! I’ll be highlighting some of my favorites and if you’re looking for some truly unique and amazing house productions, be sure to hit up the read more link!

I’ll be discussing the highlights, including high quality samples and provide you with all the juicy details about the album!

The Highlights

I start my journey with the very first track on the album, Salvation by Sergio Fernandez. At just over 7 minutes in length this funky little progressive house number has great synth work early on to give the track some fantastic groove.  Add to that the inclusion of some crisp and unique percs and we’ve got just the thing to heat things up on a dreary October day. Showering Monkey by Andy Newland  and Osictone is rather similar is overall sound to Salvation, however it seems to have a slightly more summery feel to it and contains heaps of glitch that ensure one doesn’t quickly get bored. The breakdown makes use of spaced out pads and a rough synth to pique interest and get the track’s energy levels fueled up for it’s second half.

Unlike the previous tracks I’ve covered, The Cult of Three by Cjay and SvenHauck takes it’s time to develop, slowly layering hats, cymbals, synths, dubbed out winds and basslines overtop a dry and crisp kick. It isn’t until the 2 minute mark that the track seems to have fully matured and at this point I’m grooving along to just the type of sexy, deep tech house that I would imagine playing in a darkened lounge. Moving along we’ve got Metlata by Stan Kolev and DJ Lion, another funky little number that develops slowly and with the inclusion of a deep horn like sample and a simple vocal sample (with other tricky vocal stabs) manages to grow into quite the complex little number.  Be sure to check out the tempo and pitch bending in the breakdown, a truly unique breakdown!

As we continue to journey through this lush house album we stumble upon a track with a solid attitude and what sounds like a whip for a kick.  The track in question is Lighthouse by Sayan.  This track draws strong parallels with many techno tracks, most strikingly is its ability to slowly build for minutes without releasing, thereby creating a hypnotic state for those listening.  It took me a few minutes to actually return from my trance like state! When I saw Ben Coda was included on the album, part of me lightened up in anticipation.  He’s one of the few deep progressive producers that I actually follow closely, and Shape the Future is no different in style and quality from his usual. The track kicks off with a deep and driving bassline that includes a ridiculously well crafted kick. Like most of his productions he focuses on delivering an emotionally poignant melody, driving bassline and summer vibe.  He nails all three!

Next up are two of my favorite club/prog house remixers, Andreaz Saenz & Robots Memory with Bogotta is Fashion. The track kicks off with a mild sound that quickly swells into a big room fanfare worthy of a darkly lit dancefloor and sexy people. The breakdown is fresh and highlights a melody that plays on top of finger clicks and big room synths. Filth & Splendour keeps things dirty with their track Evolution that is a calm stormer that doesn’t inflict much dancefloor damage until the 4th minute at which point I’m instantly drawn to an opening track, something Sander van Doorn would play.

Wrapping things up in my highlights is Foc I Fum by Sonny Wharton. This tracks takes off in a different way than most of the other tracks on this album, but this new style is refreshing and gives my ears something entirely new to adjust to. Sonny manages to create a subtle groove with ondulating synths in the background while his great ear for percs, hats and chimes keeps the listener entertained.

The Big Picture

I’m not going to lie, I recognized about 20% of the producers featured on this album prior to opening it and inserting it into my usb port (weird, I know!). However, I can now proudly state that of the other 80% of the producers, I’ve discovered a huge batch of them that are capable of mesmerizing the listener and deliver deep, soulful house that isn’t your typical club or radio fare.  This album probably isn’t perfect for the club, or a crazy workout, but it’s exactly what I can see myself studying to, working along with or relaxing by the beach with a mojito in my hand to.

I’ve highlighted 9 of the 22 tracks, and I’d have to say that for an album of this size, that’s a pretty damn impressive success ratio, especially coming from someone who still considers himself a trance-head. If you’re looking for some great up and coming talent, be sure to give this album the time of day, and if nothing else, keep an eye peeled for the artists I highlighted today.

I’ve tried deciphering the meaning behind this rather unique release title, and other than a few random Filipino words, I’ve not come up with any concrete details. After much research i decided to actually read the press release and to my surprise I found the following tidbit: “Together with the title that translates as the Community of Love, and works as homage to the humanitarian organization in Congo that is focused on preserving Pygmies and their culture.”

London based DJ and vocalist, Jackie Misfit was inspired by music at an early age. Owning her first keyboard at six she soon realized her life’s passion and went on to graduate from the conservatorium of music as an accomplished vocalist and pianist. Her yearning to express her music in all it’s forms led her to a variety of bands and instruments until finally finding her place on the dance floor.

Today Jackie is at the forefront of the minimal movement in the UK and her latest, Kundi la Mapendo, is a slice of tribal tech house that would move even the staunchest of Republicans. Ok, who am I kidding, every one knows Republicans can’t dance.

Jackie Misfit – Kundi la Mapendo (Original Mix)

The track kicks off with a very pop-ish melody and perc lead that make me believe I’m about to hear Katy Perry bust out her worn out voice any second.  But, instead of inflicting pain the track quietly develops a tribal edge (complete with a cowbell!) as the 2 minute long intro progresses. A vocal track appears at the 90 second mark, adding an almost mystical and primal air to the track. Such chanting evokes thoughts of a tribal mother mourning the loss of a dear one, and considering Jackie’s vocal training, I wonder if this is her singing? The breakdown comes in the last third of the track (odd!), but judging by the previous 7 minutes of airplay, Jackie isn’t one to conform to many standards.  The track pushes along rather easily, and before we know it, nearly 10 minutes have evaporated and the track comes to an end.  This is a tasty little treat of minimal tech house with some strong minimal techno influences.

Jackie Misfit – Kundi la Mapendo (Nima Gorji Remix)

This version, first of all, is considerably shorter and has a much more dancefloor worthy 4×4 beat right from the get-go. A minute into the track and the bassline drops off to concentrate on the vocal chanting and a great perc lead that leads up to our first mini build/crash of the track. Instead of remaining mostly tech house in style Nima has instead decided to infuse it with a mildly progressive groove that really appeals to my househead side. As is typical for songs in this style, the breakdown doesn’t arrive triumphantly, to quickly and decisively silence the track but instead min breaks, builds and crashes are placed throughout the song to keep things entertaining along the way.  Nima’s style exemplifies this quality perfectly!

The Verdict

This is a perfect example of tech house (or minimal techno) that isn’t boring, pretentious or overly done.  Both versions provide a tribal edge, thanks to some interesting drums and percs, and that haunting chanting vocal track. As for my favorite I’ll have to choose Nima’s remix…I’m a sucker for a deep and driving bassline.

Score: 7/10

This landed in my lap a while ago now, and though I’ve only had the chance to give it a few quick listens, I simply had to tell you all about it! I’m sure you’ve all been wondering why we haven’t heard much from Brian (BT) over the past year, and luckily he hasn’t been relaxing! He’s been hard at work on his latest artist album, Deus Ex Machina.

This is his lead off single, appropriately dubbed The Rose of Jericho, and I’ll be packing in both releases (part 1 and 2) in this review, for a grand total of 6 tracks!  Along with the original mix are remixes from Robbie Rivera (x2), Sultan & Ned Shepard, Adam K & Soha and Virtual Vault!

BT – Rose of Jericho (BT’s Deus Ex Machina Album Mix)

Brian’s been regarded as a visionary in the electronic music scene, for good reason, and this latest effort is a testament to his immeasurable skill in the production studio.  The track is unique in many respects, but it’s spacious and celestial attributes truly stand out. From the very start of the track I feel instantly transported to a different universe, and I have to wonder if this track is indeed Brian’s creation, or from some other worldly god…possibly one from a machine? If you’re looking for an incredibly unique progressive house tune to add to your collection, look no further.  This is perfect as a set starter!

BT – Rose of Jericho (Robbie Rivera New Juicy Music Mix)

Robbie’s another veteran of the house scene, and he’s added his Juicy Music signature sound to BT’s original masterpiece. The intro in this track is rather epic, with a smooth and warm build over the first 90 seconds that quickly changes pace to display a rather quirky and groovy minimalist tech house groove. After the second minute, there’s nearly no indication this is the original, as Robbie has really given it an overhaul, creating a dirty, grimy and bouncy club friendly version. From here on in it’s mayhem, with a few bright moments to highlight the original celestial melody.

BT – Rose of Jericho (Sultan & Ned Shepard Remix)

These two have been behind countless summer anthems over the years, and when I saw their name on the first of two parts for this release, I had high hopes.  The track kicks off with a lovely Miami house groove that would be right at home during WMC and to call this infectious would be a serious understatement.  Pure patio bliss.

BT – Rose of Jericho (Adam K & Soha Remix)

I’ve loved these two producers for some time now as their ability to create truly memorable house tunes is second to none.  I can easily count dozens of memories attached to moments when I’ve heard their productions played, and this latest effort does no different. Lush, deep and groovy, this remix stands out for its big room sound paired up with a truly spine tingling Balearic vibe. Love at first listen.

BT – Rose of Jericho (Robbie Rivera Juicy Miami After Hours Remix)

Robbie sees himself providing a second remix for this track and this time around he’s gone with a more driving and hypnotic groove that will certainly find its way into many an after hours club. Though the track is dark, deeeeep, and infectious, I have to state that it seems to lack proper direction and things get a little too busy for my liking.

BT – Rose of Jericho (Virtual Vault Remix)

Wow, seems we’ve got a trance remix in the second package and it comes from none other than Virtual Vault, which we’ve covered here before for his remix of New Dawn by Steve Forte Rio (Tiesto???). This remix presents a more mature sound that is banging from start to end. I have to say that to think this track is a remix of the original is simply mind blowing. Though it might not be the greatest remix of BT’s original, I can say with certainty that it accomplishes far more than I could ever have imagined for a trance version of such a unique house tune. Kudos!

The Verdict

This is actually a very complex 2 part release that I had a hard time getting into at first, but once I got it, it all made so much sense.  The original is possibly the most unique progressive house track I’ve heard in years, and each remix provides a decidedly different take on it. As for my favorite, I’m giving the Original Mix my nod, with the Sultan & Ned Shepard Remix a very close second!

Score: 9/10
