This man needs no introduction, but in case the name Solarstone isn’t familiar, let’s quickly recap his last 15 years in the biz! Solarstone is Rich Mowatt, producer and DJ. Producing and releasing trance, progressive and chillout since 1994 under various aliases including Young Parisians, Z2 and Liquid State.

His most popular releases to date include ‘Seven Cities’, ‘Late Summer Fields’, ‘Solarcoaster’ and ‘Rain Stars Eternal’. Previous lineups included Sam Tierney (1994 – 1997) and Andy Bury (1994 – 2006). Solarstone’s label interests include ‘Solaris Recordings’, Insatiable Records and the Solaris International radio show (previously Deepblue Radio – Rich also co-ran Deepblue Records until mid 2008 when he took over Solaris Recordings).

Now that you’re up to speed, let’s talk about this highly acclaimed remix CD that was released last November, but took me two months to get around to apparently. On the CD are remixes from Solar Energy, Bot Cyprian, Probspot, Stan Void, Ferry Corsten, Bissen and a few others. The styles are varied in this package, from uplifting trance to vocal infused breakbeats, there’s something for nearly every taste on this compilation CD.

Highlights

The album kicks off with a well balanced, open-aired vocal trance remix by Solar Energy, a Polish DJ and Producer. Part of Me’s strength is its vocals, and the way in which they blend into the instrumentation effortlessly to create a happy feel-good vibe. Just the thing to kick off this CD! Moving along we’re treated to a breakbeat remix, Slave, from Probspot, and though I’ve loved his work in the past, I had no idea he was capable of breakbeat, let alone something to stunningly unique. In most cases I find myself needing to be at the helm of a ridiculously fast moving car in order to enjoy breaks, but this remix is pure butter. Kudo points for including those haunting vocals and making it all work!

The CD’s fifth track is one we know well, and love well. Ferry Corsten’s remix of Late Summer Fields has been featured in live sets, radio shows and not too long ago, the subject of a rather in depth review on a certain *cough* review site. I recommend heading over to the review for more details…

The last two tracks I’m highlighting are both heavy hitters, but in two very distinctly different genres. The first, a remix of Breakaway by Jaksaw, is just down right dirty, grimy and groovy. I’m having a difficult time wrapping my head around the entire track, it’s style is unlike what I normally hear, and it’s got just enough wobble/wonk to not irritate me. This is just a happy-dirty groovy club friendly beast. The last highlight of the compilation is a remix of The Last Defeat Pt 1 by Bissen and it is 100% in your face, peak time trance with a dose of euphoria and tech. This is exactly what Bissen does best, and he nails this one home.

The Verdict

I highlighted 6 of the 11 tracks on this package, and honestly felt that all 6 of these deserve a 9+!  These are all examples of fine craftwork, creativity and ingenuity…and to piece it all together, well, we all know it takes a special kind of person, and that person can only be Rich.  I highly recommend this entire album to you, but be sure to at least listen to the samples below of the tracks I highlighted above.

Subtraxx Remixed – Part 1 is presenting to you some of their most loved tracks released on the label, updated to the sound of the new decade to come, with some of the label’s newest talent serving up tasty remixes.  Several artists were asked including Nervous Testpilot, Marko Kantola, Allende, and Finnish Ima’gin.

There is a wide variety of artists in this deep package with some of the best trance and progressive sounds coming from Finland. Remixed tracks are: Sied Van Riel- Fearless, Miika Kuisma – Scorpio, PeakTwins – Tarragona, Tearrain – Sleepless Fall, and Life In Streams – Ugly Things In A Pretty World & Marco Torrance – Zilent World.

Each remix is truly unique and I guarantee you will find something you like, and let’s be honest, who doesn’t already love the Finnish trance sound? Read on past the break for my quick run through, and some high quality samples!

Sied van Riel – Fearless (Syna Remix)

This is a rather interesting progressive trancer with tons of energy.  As I was listening to it I couldn’t help but think about adding some vocals to the track, Tiff Lacey’s voice is perfectly suited for this beauty’s overall sound.  This would go down well on a sunlit patio or a laser lit club.

Miika Kuisma – Scorpio (Pasi Korhonen Remix)

Industrialized breakbeats.  That’s how I would sum this unique and original spin on Miika’s original masterpiece. Think of something à la Juno Reactor meets Finnish prog…

Tearrain – Sleepless Fall (Ima’gin Remix)

A simple progressive tune that has a devastating effect.  Don’t believe me? Listen to the breakdown above and close your eyes. Please don’t operate any heavy machinery while attempting this.

PeakTwins – Tarragona (Ayleon Remix)

This is a light and airy rework of Tarragona with some soft vocal samples in the distance.  This track has groove to spare and obliterates the previous tracks in bounce!

Life in Streams – Ugly Things in a Pretty World (Marko Kantola Remix)

Dark and groovy, I imagine this could be the brain child of Fuzzy Nipple and Perry O’Neill.  This is a progressive number that is beyond sexy and manages to keep me entertained throughout it’s duration.

Marco Torrance – Zilent World (Allende Remix)

Allende rounds things out with a vintage sound, think back to 2003….Scott Bond, Robert Miles, Robert Nickson, etc…. This is pure beach trance!

The Verdict

Though each remix was a proper slice of Finnish trance music, I wasn’t as moved as previous releases from Subtraxx have moved me in the past.  This however, should not go against the remixers involved in this package, each and every track was still better than 90% of the stuff currently being released at the moment.  Just don’t expect it to blow your socks off…

As an avid trance fan I rarely take the time to explore other genres. Today I get to dive head first into the latest from Soulsupplement Records, a groovy and funky little house number that is sure to make you groove to the beat.

Soulsupplement Records is a Las Vegas based independent record label founded in 2001 by Bruno Browning and Curtis Bledsoe. Soulsupplement has found that they can create the best sounds by taking all of their favorite analog gear and combining it with the best production software on the market today. By blending these two different production systems, they have the best of both worlds, which allows them to create their own unique sound.

‘Unique Sound’ barely scratches the surface with this three track release featuring Jean-Paul Sarkozy, one of Bruno’s aliases. The release features remixes from MaryF and two reworks, the Grimey Groove and Breakin Rules remixes. Read on past the break for some tasty deep, funky, soulful house and some tasty breaks.

Swordtail Records is an outfit that consistently produces quality progressive house, and this release, the 34th to date, provides a well rounded package with 4 tracks from 4 completely different producers!

Things kick off in style with Timebomb by Simon Firth, a dubbed out tech house beast that sleeps quietly until morphing into a roadtrip destined breaks track. Next up is Richard Sander with a deep and lush progressive house tune, Deep Forest.  Listening to this track truly does evoke a serene and peaceful emotion within me, almost like I’m alone deep in a dense forest.

DJ Jack5on does the next honors with his track titled Domain Controller.  To those in the IT field, this term will seem very familiar, and it leaves me wondering what Active Directory might have to do with music?!? I’m kind of reminded of deadmau5 while listening to this track, and with a breakdown worthy of a progressive trance tune, this track is a must listen! Rounding things out is FreddySlav with Night Rain, a track that is progressive house in nature, and pushes things along with a rolling groove.

I first discovered Evgeny shortly after Che Armstrong launched the Neuroscience Recordings label back in January of 2007.  Since then I’ve been following both the label and Evgeny’s progress and they’ve both experienced massive success in the trance realm, success they rightly deserve!

Evgeny’s debut album is quite literally, and I know this sounds rather cliché, a breakthrough album.  This young Russian producer has managed to compile 12 tracks that embody his origin and evolution as a dance music producer and will surely cement his position in a very rare group of producers. Traversing multiple genres from start to finish, this album is a journey through the mind of a young producer extraordinaire and he gives listeners of all walks enough time and space to catch up and enjoy what they’re hearing.

The Breakdown

The album kicks off with a rather interestingly named track, Lemon Coloured Morning, and though I’ve spent some time wondering what it means, I’ve not come up with any reasoning behind.  The track is smooth progressive with a touch of glitchy techno and a wonderfully delightful rolling arpeggio melody. What’s wonderful about this track is that it will certainly appeal to those who might not associate with the dance music culture. I’d even picture this in a movie scene.

Moving along we’ve got a crisp and tangy breakbeat track in Air Vendors (yet another of Evgeny’s cryptic track names…) that warrants a listen or two for its originality. Hylea kicks things up with a healthy dose of melodic trance while Changeful World steals my heart away with it’s intricate vocal stab work. Nanofractal has a vintage Markus Schulz/Coldharbour sound to it (which I happen to love!) while Selena is very Santiago Nino-like in it’s progressive electro vibe.

Rounding things out are Point of No Return and Transient, two tracks that tone things down and wrap the album up nicely!

The Verdict

I’ve only spent a few hours with the album and already its become a surefire stay in my iPod and car CD collection.  The styles Evgeny meanders through include melodic trance, breakbeat, chillout, electro and techno.  What he’s accomplished is remarkable and this massive artist debut will certainly cause waves the world over.

There are few labels that manage to put a smile on my face as consistently as Toes In The Sand does.  Though their releases don’t come around very often, their high level of quality more than makes up for this fact.  Their philosophy is simple: “As our name implies, the music of Toes in the Sand Recordings is evocative of perfect moments that make you say, “Aaah.” You know how good it feels when you’re on the beach, running your feet through the sand taking in a warm sea breeze. Toes in the Sand has captured through sound those feelings of joy and contemplation.”

Russia’s own Abdomen burst brings progressive breaks back to Toes with this sparkling number. Also getting in on the breakbeat action is rising star Oleg Zubkov, who darkens things up a bit on his remix. If you prefer a house rhythm, don’t miss the entries from the legendary Retroid and Overcast’s Ben Coda, both of whom have been killing it on the remix tip all year.

Abdomen Burst – So Many Hopes (Original Mix)

The track kicks off with softly sweeping pads in the distance, while at the same time  mellowed out percussion elements play along and introduce the breakbeat bassline at the 30 second mark. The tracks gets beefy close to the 2 minute mark, and the sheer depth given to the song is remarkably crisp at this stage. The combination of an industrial breakbeat and a crystal clear high end create such a contrast that it’s nearly impossible not to be moved by it! I’d like to draw attention to the breakdown, which, unlike many other breakdowns in electronica, actually fits perfectly with the vibe and atmosphere provided prior, and after, the breakdown. Be sure to check it!

Abdomen Burst – So Many Hopes (Retroid Remix)

Taking the original into an entirely different direction, Retroid manages to capture the essence while creating something that is decidedly the work of his craft. The track kicks off with a pulsing bassline on the quarter beat and from there it morphs into a deep and relaxing progressive houser. The track doesn’t carry much weight in the lowend, but I think the goal here was to create something that balances everything out as smoothly and organically as possible. The track is dreamy, groovy and with just a touch of funk to it, you know you’ll groove to it!

Well, where to begin with Ben’s productions?  I only recently discovered the man a few months ago (thanks Toes!), and I’ve loved everything he’s touched. This latest remix is no different.  Taking the original and following Retroid’s footsteps, he’s crafted a wonderful progressive house number that unlike Retroid’s take, provides a punchy bassline and kick combo that steals the show from the get-go. The track is summery, and though I picture myself on a sandy beach, it feels just at home while working away at the office. Sweeping pads, driving kicks and an energy level that never lets up characterize this smooth progressive house tune.  A delightful way to put a smile on anyone’s face!

Abdomen Burst – So Many Hopes (Oleg Zubkov Remix)

Rising star Oleg Zubkov delivers a darker more eerie version of the original while maintaining the same bounce inducing breakbeat.  This version is more epic, and would be very well suited as a film score of some sort. It seems to possess a certain life to it, possibly thanks to the stark contrast between the breakbeat and the synth based wind instruments used to inject variety and openness to the top end.

Overall, the release did exactly what it set out to do.  Its ability to calm the listener while invigorating them is something I don’t often come across, and any way you slice this one, there’s something to please just about everyone!  My pick of the litter is definitely Ben’s remix!

I’ve recently renewed my love for anything Ville Lope touches, and this latest release features a fantastic remix by the man himself.  The original, Forever, by Syna, is featured on Bonzai Trance. For those who don’t recognize Syna by name, after almoust a year-long break, the Most Famous Boy Band in Finnish Trance Scene returns – with a huge progressive breakbeat choon!

“Forever” combines a movie-like atmosphere, big orchestral elements and organic sounds (including saxophone) with a driving bassline and precisely cut beats to create a truly progressively genre melting release. Along with the Original Mix are remixes by Ayleon and Ville Lope.  There’s also a radio Edit but I won’t bother with it.

Syna – Forever (Original Mix)

The track’s intro is haunting.  It’s deep, gloomy and very atmospheric.  With tons of industrial synths and pads the track kicks off in a breakbeat frenzy that actually sounds like drum’n'bass slowed down, lol. Mega points for the sheer originality of this production. The track however, isn’t very DJ friendly, due largely to it’s length being just shy of 5 minutes.  Nevertheless, it’s got a tasty breakdown that features some classical piano work and a gorgeous sounding saxophone. The track, though short, feels large and envelopes the listener.

Syna – Forever (Ayleon Remix)

Back into progressive land, this time around, with Ayleon as our tour guide. At the moment, I’ve got no dirt on said remixer, weird.  Does anyone know anything?

This remix is funky and bouncing.  I could definitely see this rocking a chilled out patio on a sun drenched beach.  I imagine the crowd slowly rising to their feet from their chairs and before they know it, they’re hooked.  I know I am.  Take the original, keep the awesome piano and sax and give it a groovy beat to bounce along to and you’ve got a winner, this remix. I especially love how the original breakbeat is incorporated into this version’s breakdown, a subtle but poignant homage to the original.

Syna – Forever (Ville Lope Remix)

And here we have Ville’s remix, a remix that takes more from the original than Ayleon’s did, but still manages to groove along progressively.  This version is definitely not well suited for a patio or a beach, but don’t be surprised when you hear it in a dark and dirty club.  Ville’s managed to create a track that’s both industrial and rough, but polished and smooth.  Not an easy feat! His breakdown is the work of a madman.  At one point it sounds like he’s got 3 separate melodies layered together, including the trance inducing sax. The track actually manages to gather momentum as it progresses after the breakdown and what turns out to be 8 minutes feel closer to 5.

Overall I have to commend this release on its originality.  It’s not often I hear a trance release try so many new things at once, and pull it off with ease.  As for my favorite, my nod’s going to the Ayleon Remix.

DJ Orion - One Sunday (anal bum cover)

Solaris Recordings, a sublabel of Lost Language, is Solarstone’s UK based trance label and in late march they released a 7 track Finnish inspired release.  The release, featuring DJ Orion’s original production ‘One Sunday’ also included 6 remixes, all of which were produced by Finnish trance nuts producers.

I don’t often come across releases that feature a chill-out / downtempo track as the original, it seems this style is normally an after thought in most trance circles.  Well, not this time around!  Along with the angelic original mix are remixes from The Beetseekers, Cid Inc, Syna, Sami Saari and Ville Lope.

DJ Orion – One Sunday (Original Mix)

I’m by no means an experienced downtempo connaisseur, but I do know one thing: I love piano based melodies….and this one features a seemingly never ending melody.  The piano bounces between soft and vibrant notes as lush pads and sweeps dance in the background. Emotions abound plentifully in this piece of music, and though it seems to clock in at a rather long 7 minutes, its entirely worth the time.

DJ Orion – One Sunday (Beetseekers Remix)

The Beetseekers is none other than Simo Paganus, aka Mind Movement and Sonecta.  With countless releases on Joof Recordings, you know he can hold his own with the big boys.  This remix has a more exotic feel to it, with the inclusion of what might be asian flutes and exotic synth based strings. The remix is as progressive as progressive can be, melting new age acid sounds with a groovy and chunky bassline to create something that easily stands out.

DJ Orion – One Sunday (Cid Inc Sunday 3am Remix)

A much more dark and groovy version of the original, this version makes heavy use of some wind instruments to move the track along.  I’m hard pressed to call this trance, it definitely seems to fit more in the progressive house genre. This track manages to continue pushing the energy during it’s entire 9 minute lifespan, and I’m left feeling spent and energized after listening to it. Strange but comforting…

DJ Orion – One Sunday (Syna Remix)

This remix kicks with a crisp breakbeat that precedes the introduction of the meat and potatoes, otherwise known as the bassline and driving kick.  Sweeping pads usher in the track past the 60 second mark and from here on in the track develops into a well balanced breakbeat track that showcases the beautiful instruments of the downtempo original.

DJ Orion – One Sunday (Sami Saari Magic Tuesday Mix)

I’m having a hard time finding words to describe this remix.  It’s definitely progressive trance, has a killer classic breakdown and buildup, but something about it’s ability to drive the listener is leaving me unimpressed.  You be the judge…

I’ve been following Ville closely over the past years, and as his sound has evolved, luckily, so have my tastes!  He always manages to pick just the right elements and craft a sound that seems to the untrained ear as standard, but after closer inspection, you realize does so much more. The track is filled with lush sweeping pads, a solid and punchy kick that creates most of the track’s drive and energy and a sublime breakdown that highlights the overly simple and effective melody. In the latter half Ville provides even more energy, an energy that was kick started as the crash and drop arrived after the breakdown.

DJ Orion – One Sunday (Sami Saari Alternative Mix)

Tribal in its sound, this remix clearly outdoes Sami’s previous remix and frankly, it’s got me wishing I was in a massive club surrounded by thousands of sweaty clubbers bopping to this deliciously groovy and funky tribal bassline.  The breakdown is as epic as progressive trance can get, and the industrial reverb he’s added to the melody is spine tingling.  Prepare yourself, this remix does everything right and is destined to be hammered in clubs this summer.

I’ve got to give my nod to Sami Saari’s Alternative Mix for it’s amazingly catchy tribal vibe.  Ville’s remix is a close second.

There are a ton of fantastic mixes and albums floating around this month, so I thought I would share some of my choice pieces of awesome work! I shall provide a bit of a description for my picks, then I shall open the floor to whomever would like to share their favorites right now. Sound good? Thought so. Read past the break for the highlights!

First up on my list is the concept album by Alex Moulton, entitled “Exodus.”

This is a strange beast indeed, for it uses the syntax of a CD release, but it is digital only…At any rate, an interesting package. The first mix starts out with Schössow’s edit of Sander van Doorn’s “Look Inside Your Head,” and moves on from there as a decent laid back, trance-y mix. It appears that the second mix is going to be one and the same…Until about halfway through, where Schössow decides to break out this absolutely filthy electro vibe. My analogy: Imagine having someone throw a bucket of dirt in your face, without provocation. However, I am not complaining…It’s an awesome mix, that ends with one of my Schössow favorites; his remix of Miko – Muzaik.

Tracklist:

Pros: At $12, it’s a decent compilation, and you’ll get it right away. Excellent electro mix.

Cons: Digital only(Call me old-fashioned, but I would’ve prefered a CD); some tracks are not available yet; album is not divided in tracks(If this were the case, I’d probably not complain about the unreleased stuff)

Notables: Look Inside Your Head, and (probably) Track 5 to the end, on CD 2.

Thoughts: …I think I need to get tested. Also, good work by Marcus! Kinda reminds me of ISoS, what with the geographically-based theme. 8.5/10!

Finally, we’ve got Hybrid’s latest compilation, the 2 CD “Sound System 01.”

I must say…Absolutely sublime. You get an ambient mix on the first disc, and a proggy-house kinda mix on the second. The ambient mix is absolutely amazing, and I cannot really describe it with words…Just listen for yourself, it is very, very worth it.

Tracklist:

Pros: Amazing showcase of Hybrid’s talent.

Cons: Some of these tracks are older, good luck searching…But other than that, absolutely nothing.

Notables: World Citizen, and Surin, for me.

Thoughts: Just get it, and witness it’s glory. 9.5/10
