Moove your arse.

Ah, a Jonas Steur track. You can count on techno-prog-house-style grooves and in this case, infectious vocals…Right? Well, that’s what I’ve come to expect! What I did not expect was to see Jonas’ brother, Simon, on remix duty, but then again, I should have expected that…This should be interesting! Read on for samples, and vote for your favorite Steur…Or remix. Whatever.

Ad Brown – Magnetize [Fris!]

A mirrored contrast between light and dark

Considering some of the review titles we’ve posted, this one is ridiculously short!  As a sublabel of Black Hole Recordings, and a young one at that, it has already left a lasting impression on me. Though I’m not sure if it’s the label itself or Mr. Brown himself, seeing as he’s now been featured at least 4 times on the label!

This latest effort, dubbed ‘Magnetize‘, features some downright filthy bass grooves, acid inspired synth builds and a hauntingly dark vocal sample that is just the bee’s knees! Along with Adam’s original mix is a Techno Prisoners remix that creates an even more techno driven hypnotic groove.

Read on past the break for my take on both versions, some high quality samples and for your chance to cast your vote!

Smooth summer trance with lush vocals.

I’ve loved Alex’s sound since he released ‘Lifter’ in 2007 on this very label, In Trance We Trust. Since then he’s released a number of other tracks on ITWT, and this latest effort incoudes, possibly for his first time, vocals!

This release is a great slice of current summer-trance.  With a lush piano melody, sweet vocals (anyone know the vocalist’s name?) and an electro inspired bassline and kickdrum, it’s sure to whip just about anybody into a frenzy. Along with Alex on this release is a stellar remix team consisting of Carl B, Darude, Kai Harmaala and Mike Shiver!

Niklas Harding – The Soul [Black Hole Recordings]

An evolved sound that is utterly captivating.

It’s been ages since I’ve given Niklas’ productions any attention, but that isn’t without reason.  His last full release prior to this one was in 2006, so to have this land in my lap was serendipity.  I was utterly head over heels with his work a few years back, so I wonder how his sound has evolved in 3 years.

As Niklas’ first in 3 years, he enlisted two unkown producers, actually, one unknown and one apparent veteran of the scene!  Joining him are 26 year old Alaa and Audible, known to some as Bill Youngman.  Bill’s first release was way back in 1996 on the recently ressucitated Serotonin label.  Who ever said Serotonin doesn’t replenish itself….it apparently only takes 8 years!

Outstanding 716-0 400x400Last month, Cyndium Events organized the very first Serenity event in the “Beursgebouw” venue, Eindhoven. For this event, Black Hole artist Cor Fijneman was sent on duty exclusively to produce an epic big room Trance theme for this very first episode. Cor, as anticipated, dished out a fabulously euphoric and big track beyond compare!

Oliver Lang – Full Tilt/Pressure Drop [Fris!]

A deep and dark house masterpiece!

7.5/10

Oliver’s been slowly making his sound heard in the house community as far back as 2005.  This latest EP, release on Black Hole sublabel Fris!, showcases a slightly darker and techier side of his producer persona.

Fris! has been releasing tracks since late 2008 (a rather young imprint), but with quality up and comers like Ad Brown and Nino Anthony on the roster, they’re already starting to make waves. I’ve been lucky enough to review most of their releases to date, if not all, and this latest adds to the string of successes they are seeing…and we’re hearing!

This 2 track EP is funky and groovy, with a distinctly old school house groove that’s combined with a new-age tech house sound that fuse together perfectly.  Read on past the break for my quick run down of the tracks, some high quality samples and for your chance to vote!

Vimana – We Came 2009 [Black Hole Recordings]

Finally a classic redone with class!

8.5/10

How about a throwback to a simpler time? The setting: 1999.  A time where everyone was worried about the end of time (known to some as y2k) and the dot com bubble burst. It was in this year that Tijs verwest and Ferry Corsten collaborated on a track titled ‘We Came’.  They chose Vimana as their alias and sadly, ‘We Came’ was featured on the only release the two ever created together.

Fast forward to today, and in typical 2009 fashion, this timeless classic has been given the 2009 treatment. Apparently the release is back by popular demand, but me thinks someone’s just trying to milk the massive success of the original. amiright?

Regardless, this release features the original mix (thank god!), 2 remixes by Russel Ogden, aka ‘Akira Kayosa’, and a remix by Black hole staple First State.

DJ Observer & Daniel Heatcliff – Fake Call [In Trance We Trust]

In a new direction, but classy nonetheless!

uppity up up

uppity up up

The latest from the Black Hole camp comes from DJ Observer & Daniel Heatcliff. When I first heard this release I was utterly disappointed, and rightfully so.  After having discover DJ Observer’s sound back in 2007 on Ali Wilson’s Tekelec Recordings (check out Inteference), I had such high hopes when I saw this land on my desk.

However, the sound he was working with in 2007 has been tossed aside and in its place he’s brought in a more subdued progressive sound to the table.  I don’t want to discredit the overall sound of this release, which in reality is emotionally driven and euphoric, but it just doesn’t compare to his old sound.

Read on to find out what I loved about this release, you already know what I dislike, so no harm in finding out about the flipside…right?

I’ve also included some high quality samples so you can be your own judge!

Markus delivers a soon-to-be classic!

black-hole-265-0-400x400
After the classy vocal tune Not Enough Time, with the vocals of Emma Hewitt, Cosmic Gate comes up with the second release from their latest album Sign Of The Times.  The club EP features the title track “Sign Of The Times” and “F.A.V.” Two solid productions that already received massive feedback from the top league DJs like Tiësto, Markus Schulz and Armin van Buuren, who play the cuts in both their live sets and radio shows.

Besides the original versions, we have a true powerhouse remix from Markus Schulz, who was assigned to rework “Sign Of The Times”. And for “F.A.V.”, Nic and Bossi themselves stripped the original version down to its bare essence and delivered a slamming Hard Dub mix!

Kris O’Neil – Those Mornings [Tunes For You]

Kris O'Neil - Those Mornings [Tunes For You]

Tunes For You is Johan Gielen’s label which originally began in 2005 as a division of Fundamental Recordings has since been taken under Black Hole Recordings‘ wide umbrella. To date, most releases on Tunes For You have simply been Johan’s own, but this latest from Kris O’Neil breaks through Johan’s sound to bring a fresh new sound to the label.

Kris has been DJing for many years, and as a producer, he’s graced Anjunabeats, AVA Blue, Mondo and many others.  This latest gem is a slight departure from his old sound and is a tasty and bouncy little progressive trance number. The track features a smooth balearic vibe (especially the Beach Bar mixes) and the inclusion of a sax-like instrument is simply breathtaking.

Read on for high quality samples, my breakdown of the various mixes (5 in total!) and be sure to vote for your favorite.
