Take note, O'Callaghan delivers a belter!

For such a young label to have 10 releases in just over a year is remarkable.  Even more impressive is the roster of artists that Matt Hardwick has managed to string into the label to date: John O’Callaghan, Ben Gold, Duderstadt, Activa and a slew of other talented producers.  We’ve been covering Matt’s label for some months now, and I can say without a doubt that this is the best release I’ve yet to hear on the Kill The Lights label.

Impossible is a sultry vocal trancer that features the vocals of a rather unknown female vocalist (is she also the uknown Gulf in this collaboration?), and though the original mix’s sound is solid, it pales in comparison to the drive and emotion that John O’Callaghan and  Ben Gold add to their versions. The original seems to place far too much emphasis on the vocals, and I’m having a really hard time getting used to her voice.  John’s version however places her track in the middle of the track’s stereo sound, creating a veritable club monster that will remain poignant and effective for years to come. Also, don’t pass Ben’s version up, it’s attitude is all together different and peak time worthy!

Read on past the break for some high quality samples of each mix, and find out for yourself why John’s version is destined to be in the top 10 vocal trance tracks of 2009.

Geezk – Faraday Cage [40 Degrees Records]

Destined to be a secret weapon!
- Andre
8/10

421-6126_600First, a little science/history lesson:

A Faraday cage or Faraday shield is an enclosure formed by conducting material, or by a mesh of such material. Such an enclosure blocks out external static electric fields. Faraday cages are named after the English scientist Michael Faraday, who invented them in 1836.

Now that you know what a Faraday Cage is, and if you already knew I’m sorry for taking away some of your time, you can get a better understanding for why Geezk has decided to label his latest effort as such on the hot new Brazilian label, 40 Degrees Records.

Faraday Cage turns the tech-trance world upside down by returning to it’s roots with a full on groove and dirty driving drums. The track bangs its way as it progresses through atmospheric elements and trancey arps, to a dark and moody breakdown. Along with Geezk’s Original Mix are two other mixes, both from Brazilian producers, Danilo Ercole and Fabio Stein.

Read on past the break for my quick rundown of each mix, some high quality samples and for your chance to vote for your favorite.

Mark Rogan – Dead of Night/Rythmical Dawn EP [Bellboy Records]

Organic techno soundscapes!

9/10

BL066-Mark-Rogan_Dead-Of-Night_Rythmical-Dawn_300

You would be forgiven for thinking Mark Rogan’s, Dead Of Night and Rythmical Dawn were created in the heart of Detroit’s depressed, post industrial scenery. But no, this classic slab of Detroit Techno was manufactured in Belfast from an artist who clearly has his finger on the moment. It’s the sound that takes you and your mind on a journey without the dramatics of a roller coaster on speed.

Rogan puts in a sterling effort for his first Bellboy release. It’s all there, the sound of Sci-Fi, the layers of 909 percussion, the subtle gear shifters emphasised in the mix by raised chord sound scapes and rhythmic enhancing ride cymbals that arrive just when you need them. Both Dead Of Night and Rythmical Dawn lean heavily on the Detroit classic Techno sound but at the same time Rogan stamps his own identity in to the proceedings with confident non formula arrangements and carefully cultivated sound ingredients all blending together to make tracks that brim with dark melody and subtle funk.

Rogan’s Bellboy debut is accompanied on remix duties by fellow Irishman Colin Mckeown aka The Parallel. Taking a more laid back approach with his mix of Rhythmical Dawn he’s focussed his mix on a sustained chord which eventually brings its self to a crescendo opening up the tracks essence to the listener. Again like Rogan, The Parallel has a love for those classic 909 drum hits and he uses various hats in one form or another to shift the song in to more energetic gears. It’s all very subtle but it will hit the right mood buttons for the listener at home or on the dance floor.

A veritable dance floor killer!

The boys behind the Be Yourself franchise land on High Contrast with a brand new track that is certainly destined to become a smash hit. Already with plenty of hits under their belt, Killer Tone has all the makings of a hit: a devastating bassline, a memorable hook a-la Jochen Miller and a bonafide club ready sound.  Jack the tempo up a bit and you’ve got a deadly dancefloor weapon that cannot be defeated, not even by that strange level 54 Wizard waiting by the door…

I’ll leave it at that for this review, and be sure to hit up the high quality sample after the break, this track is so hot it can barely be contained on this website!

It'll Ring Your Bell!

7/10

L-46465-1138289783Jef Martins, Lazy Jay, is to many people, an unknown.  He sure was to me, but his sound, though unique as it is, fits right into the whacked out world of clubby techno. Which is surprising, considering he is one third of Lasgo, the ever popular euro-dance act…

If you’ve been lucky enough to enjoy Lazy’s work in the past then you know exactly what to expect.  Otherwise, think of something along the lines of Dada Life. This is a small release with a single track, so head on over past the jump for my quick rundown and a high quality sample.

Wippenberg – Pong [High Contrast Records]

A classy tribute for a classy game!

Believe it or not, Wippenberg’s first production was released in 1995, but it wasn’t until being picked up by the High Contrast crew in 2007 that his career in club forward progressive trance truly took off. With a string of massive hits since then, Wippenberg delivers yet another amazing club ready monster that was recently featured on CD1 of Gareth Emery’s The Sound of Garuda.

Since hearing it on Gareth’s mix I’ve had it on loop, and I can attest that I am not the only one.  Well today is your lucky day! The track has been released for nearly 4 weeks now and I’m covering the Original Mix and Tocadisco remixes.  Head on over the break for my full rundown of each version, some high quality samples and for your choice to vote for your fave!

Guy Mearns – Impulses [Nu-Depth Digital]

Listening will induce impulsive dancing

17-6200_600

I first discovered Guy some years ago with his Collaborations EP on Digital Remedy. Since then he’s been rather quiet in the production realm of things, with a few remixes and releases for Tidy, Slinky and  Bonzai. This latest effort on Nu-Depth Digital is beast and packs a devastating punchin the low end, combining hard trance elements with uplifting melodies that create a syncopated beat.

Adding to the original mix’s power are 3 remixes from Eddie Sender, Sean Truby and Stuart James. All three are currently on my watch list, so you can imagine my excitement when i discovered a release that featured all three, and Guy to boot!  Read on past the break for my full rundown of each version, some high quality samples and for your chance to vote for your fave!

Roger-M ft Eva – Fading Away [Black Hole Recordings]

These won't soon fade from memory...

9/10

R-1991556-1257196652

Roger-M is a brand new name to me, and judging by his discogs page, a rather new name to you too. His first release, on Neutone Recordings, landed in 2008 and one could consider this his breakthrough release, on Tiesto’s venerable Black Hole Recordings imprint. Roger teams up with vocalist Eva, who’s been exclusively featured on Roger’s three releases, and I’m sure we’ll be hearing plenty more from this beautiful voice.

Along with the original Extended Mix are 8 other versions, with vocal, dub and radio edits from Jonas Steur and The Senate. Each mix doesn’t stray very far from the original, providing a veritable jackpot of balearic progressive trance that we’ve come to expect from Black Hole.  Read on past the break for my full rundown of each version, some high quality samples and for your chance to vote for your fave!

Lost Witness – Happiness Happening [2Play Records]

10 years of aging, like a fine wine!
- Andre
9/10

R-13644-001

A rather challenging rework, considering it’s stature in the classic trance scene! However, Ali nails the track perfectly with two stellar 2009 reworks.

Originally released on Ministry of Sound back in 1999, this classic has gone on to be released on 10 other labels over the years.  The original track is a cornerstone of the vocal trance ancestry, and many of us can still remember first hearing it while wasting the nights away in dark clubs, surrounded by bright lights and loud music.

These 2009 reworks by Tekelec head Ali Wilson take the track to entirely different heights.  Keeping the track’s original sound and emotion intact, Ali prepares the track for the dance floors of 2009, adding a heap of techno and electro infused elements to a murderous bassline that makes most trance productions pale in comparison.  But don’t take my word for it, head on over past the break and have a listen to the Tekelec Remix and Tekelec Dub Mix.

Johan Gielen – Repeat The Music [Magik Muzik]

Repetition has never felt so good!
- Andre
9/10

R-1991552-1257196371

Magik Muzik’s storied career began in 2001, started by then named DJ Tiesto, and eventually absorbed into the Black Hole Recordings umbrella.  The label is home to some of the best tracks, remixes and full CD compilations the scene has ever heard. This latest effort, from trance purist Johan Gielen, is no exception.

Unlike what you would most likely expect from Johan, he delivers a club ready progressive trance number that is dirty and destined to rock floors worldwide.  This, though a departure from the old Johan sound, is perfectly in line considering his rework of the Phunk Investigation track , Shuri Shuri, on Avanti. This time around, Phunk Investigation return the favor with a slamming rework!

Read on past the break for some high quality samples and be sure to give them a listen, you won’t want to miss this infectious groove, vocal track and overall club friendly sound.
