Artento Divini – Biding My Time [High Contrast Records]

Normally Aaron reviews releases that arrive on the High Contrast Records label, but it’s time for a change, is it not?  This latest release on this storied High Contrast label which saw Dark Side of the Moon as it’s inaugural release is continuing it’s string of successful club tunes. With a packed roster that has included, over the last 5 years, releases by Marcel Woods, Filo & Peri, Joop, Paul van Dyk, Rank 1, Jochen Miller and countless other stars, it’s no surprise to see the fast rising Artento grace it’s covers.

High Contrast Recordings’ 85th release is a club stormer with a memorable hook and an easily remembered vocal track, a recipe that has proven highly successful for nearly each artist on this label’s roster.  And who can fault them really?  On remix duties we have Artento providing a Rework Edit, while San delivers a big room, big club version of the original.

Artento Divini – Biding My Time (Original Mix)

The track kicks off with a blip like synth that breaks up the rolling kick drum in the distance, effectively allowing the listener to truly fill in the blanks. The vocal track is introduced briefly at the 90 second mark and then it disappears as quickly as it appeared. Artento cleverly uses random percussion, hats and claps to create a clubby, drowned out groove that beckons my feet to move. It’s at the 3:00 mark that the track fully develops as a male voice, unnamed for now, belts out the title of the track in the chorus and the instruments stand back to give the voice all the room it needs. In the background are wind synths and lush pads as the voice progresses, truly captivating the listener.  I think we can all relate to the message in these lyrics.

Decidedly different from the Original Mix, Artento decides to add a certain exotic air to the track.  It must be the strange twanged strings that have been added to the melody, or the saw synth that’s prominent in the breakdown, and subsequent sections in the track….but regardless, this version has much more attitude and is more conducive to a late night tech trance freak out.

San delivers a smooth and punchy kick from the get-go and at the 90 second mark the smooth groove is replaced with a solid vocal track, nearly the same as the original, but we’ve got a great building synth in the background ushering in the next bar. This remix is very In Charge like in sound, which might explain why San was featured in a recent Marco V release. The breakdown is where this track truly shines, giving the song new life with a well presented building breakdown that is club worthy, and an instant smash hit.

The Verdict

This is yet another of the typically High Contrast sounding releases, and I mean just that.  This is a surefire hit with clubbers, DJs, and radio listeners worldwide.  The male vocals are raspy and smooth, with lyrics that anyone can relate to.  Each track is big room friendly, and I’m sure they’d rock a car stereo!  DO not pass this release by!

As for my favorite, I’m giving San the heads up, though each mix is fantastic in its own respect.
