The 'Original Mix' is aural bliss!

7/10

toes043_500x500Our favorite chilled out progressive/breaks house label returns with a sultry little number from California’s own Thee-O and LA’s DJ Huggie to create perhaps the grooviest Toes release to date. Toes in The Sand Recordings are one of the world’s most consistent labels, purveyors of releases by some of the world’s classiest producers.

Thee-O and Huggie team to deliver a deep and chuggy house track that is destined to be playlisted by many a DJ, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it was licensed for countless compilation. Along for the ride are The Last Atlant and Python, both delivering their own style that are in stark contrast with the original.

Read on past the break for my take on this release, some high quality samples and for your chance to vote for your favorite!

The use of atmospheric breaks and crashes within the intro of the song sets the tone perfectly for the rest of the track.  I close my eyes and I imagine myself safely tucked away under a beach front awning enjoying a wonderful storm across the beach as the sun sets through the clouds. Both exciting and relaxing at the same time. I’m also reminded of other songs I’ve enjoyed in the past, but I can’t seem to put my finger on exactly what songs those might be.  One thing is for sure: This is 100% pure Toes in the Sand.  The track slowly builds, adding percussion elements, bells, vocal samples and celestial pads to the mix. The breakdown is lush, sentimental and jaw dropping in its effectiveness, while remaining simple in nature.  All in all, this is the kind of track you might not like at first, but manages to grow on you a few listens later.  I nearly skipped over this originally, am I glad I didn’t!

Thee-O & Huggie – Night Owl (The Last Atlant Remix)

A slightly more glitchy version of the original, this one seems to lack a deep bassline and in turn seems a little flat and lifeless.

Thee-O & Huggie – Night Owl (Python Remix)

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

I first stumbled across Python way back in 2007, I believe it was in the Neuroscience Recordings label at the time.  Since then, this Russian trio has been hard at work, delvering releases and remixes for countless labels.  This version is more similar to the original than The Last Atlant remix was, but it’s unique in many ways.  Gone is the deep and sultry groove, and in it’s place we now have a funky little number that focuses on a dry kick and midrange percs to move things along. Gone are the vocal samples of the original, and the high end crystal sounds are so crisp and lively that they essentially remove the need for any vocals. A solid remix from this busy newcomer!

The Verdict

The original mix is pure aural bliss, but the two remixes really didn’t do much for me.  I’m giving the original my vote, and a solid 9/10

Score: 7/10
