Andy Moor & Ashley Wallbridge Feat. Meighan Nealon – Faces [AVA Recordings]
Released exclusively on Audiojelly.com today, I’ve been anxiously awaiting this release for many, many weeks. For those of you tied to other download shops, you’ll have to wait till July 6th…..and if that isn’t enough, we’ve got some tasty samples after the break. To, you know, hold you over.
This is the 15th release on Andy Moor’s AVA Recordings label, and with a storied panel of artists, this latest proves that the man behind the name has still got it going on! The original is funky and quirky at times, but paired up with Meighan’s vocals, it all fits well and provides a homegeneous (I’ve wanted to use that word in a non-science context since grade 9 science) sound that’s rather pleasing. Along with the original are two remixes, one from Tenishia (hot off a collab with Markus Schulz) and Ben Gold.
As promised, details, samples and polls are after the break!

Andy’s known for his quirky trance style that combines elements from breakbeat, trance, pop and at times, rock music. And who can forget his mind bending vocal works on some of his earlier work? The track kicks off with a rather unique intro that fades away to reveal a crisp clap/kick combo. 30 seconds in and we’re enjoying a smooth bassline, distant vocal samples and a tight snare. The track continues to develop into a tech/electro/nuage club trance ditty and when Meighan’s voice is finally ushered in it’s unique sound blends nearly effortlessly with the groovy bassline et al. Huge props for the almost house like beats, at least in style, not sound, that the two have created. Unlike most trance, this is ridiculously easy to groove to, and will probably result in more ‘feet to the floor’ than ‘hands in the air’. Ashley and Andy have created a catchy tune that will certainly please most, and best of all, will work well as an introduction to trance for some.

Tenishia literally burst onto the trance scene in 2007. After collaborating with Kirsty Hawkshaw on ‘Outsiders’, the boys from Malta have been leaving a mark on just about every trance music fanatic. This version removes the more quirky elements of the original and replaces them with a deeper sound, something a little more emotionally driven. The breakdown features the soft synth melody (and a sidechained melody for good measure) until we’re entranced by Meighan’s voice again. After the crash the track becomes fully Tenishia’s typical sound…that big room style you’ve all come to know and love. Heavy basslines, deep kicks and crisp snares allow the boys to transport me directly to Pacha without having to move an inch.

Ben’s always been a peak-time trance staple for me and my livesets, so when I saw his name on the last remix in this pack, my eyes instantly lit up. Ben’s sound falls somewhere between the typical Discover or Vandit sound and the likes of Aly & Fila. The track takes some time to get warmed up, but I have to point the rather unique mini builds (good example @ 1:22), in which is applies a rather heavy pitch bend on a melody crescendo. When the vocal track is brought in I’m amazed at how well her voice fits the overall sound of Ben’s remix. The breakdown presents a lush melody that precedes Meighan’s voice and then BAM, the track builds and explodes. I’m eating up every ounce of energy that Ben’s put into this remix.
The Verdict
I originally heard this played on a few radio shows some time ago, and well, the wait was well worth it. I enjoyed every version on the release, but my nod goes to Ben for his classy and energy fuelled remix.
Score: 8.5/10
