Andy Tau – Set Free [Neuroscience Recordings]

Andy’s sound has quickly become one of my favorites of the past year. His remix of Somewhere Else by Arpi on Neuroscience Recordings is constantly rotating in my playlists.  Since then he’s had releases on Infrasonic, Monster Force and Soup Recordings….to name but a few.

This latest effort, though not the entire release, comes from the Neuroscience Recordings camp and I had the chance to review Tim Grube’s (of Coldharbour fame) and Mike Hovsepian’s Zero Gravity remix.  The track is certainly unique.  It’s dark, eclectic at times and manages to combine dark techno into a progressive trance structure that simply blows my mind.

The track’s intro is dark and grimy.  It actually manages to make me feel energized and sluggish at the same time…is this the general feeling they’re referring to when they titled the remix Zero Gravity? Regardless, the track wastes no time and keeps moving along at what feels like a torrid pace. The track is nearly void of a breakdown, thanks to their ingenious layering of elements instead of introducing solid silence for a few seconds. The track’s a little on the short side for a progressive trance production, but I rather enjoy that and it ensures that nothing feels like it’s dragging on.
