r-1700235-1237827097I’ve been watching Norwegian hotshot Kimito Lopez for awhile, even having the chance to interview him, following his release of the awesome Melkweg (Which appeared on ISOS7, by the way). Funny guy, isn’t he? Strangely enough, I’m not so amused by this new E.P.’s track title…How dare he say that there’s no mermaids! He doesn’t know, he’s not a marine biologist, is he?! What’s next? No chupacabras? No Bigfoot? Blasphemy!

…But I’ll ignore that and try to proceed with a neutral mindset. Read on!

Simple beat, spiced with a bit of glitch accent, just to start. A reversed cymbal cues in claves, very slight pads, and well, a whale call. A sweep introduces a bassline, and we are off. The vibes are very deep here, as the instrumentation layers on and off. A rhythm synth joins in along with some female vocals (No lyrics attached). The break is ripe with subtleties; waves crashing, tribal percussion(Which was already introduced, but it does well here), and the ever-so-gradually brought in lead, which builds nicely back into the groove.

Of course we’ve gotta start with DJs in mind, and as such we build and layer from scratch. Right on the cusp of the track the bassline kicks in, merely to fill out the track, but not provide too much stab. The stab is provided by this tubular bit of a synth, which gradually sidesteps to accomodate some deep pads, and neat effects. The break lets those effects ebb and flow, while the spectrum fills out nicely; a full bass pad bleeds in, and after a moment of silence, in comes our melody, playing solo before a slight build back into the groove, whereupon it plucks in synchronicity with the drums of before.

The two tracks are consistently plotted and planned, I believe, but they are, as with Kimito’s work, consistently quality. Kimito is able to move quite smoothly between the deeper progressive style and the peak-time slamming style. And despite his audacious proclamation (Hey Kimito, the absence of evidence is NOT the evidence of absence!…Not safe for work, incidentally.) these two tracks deliver! My pick is There’s No Such Thing As Mermaids, it has this deep vibe, and those whale calls are a great addition. 9/10!
