Dada Life – Happy Hands and Happy Feet EP [The Hours]

Last week I highlighted a freebie and today it brings me much pleasure to review the entire EP, the latest from Dada Life: Happy Hands and Happy Feet EP. Dada Life consists of Stockholm-based Olle Corneer and Stefan Engblom. Engblom is also known as Phatzoo, who’s seen releases on Marco V’s imprint, In Charge.
This release is jam packed with in your face energy, ridiculous electro and techno and this strange feeling of being out of control, yet enjoying every minute of it. Along with the original radio edit are 4 remixes: Malente’s Wasted Kidz & Wacky Mix, Alex Gopher’s Remix, Moonbootica Remix and Stefan’s alter ego, Phatzoo.
Read on past the break to find out how the original is taken to new heights and be sure to vote for your favorite after you’ve sampled them.

This track doesn’t fuck around. The track is reminiscent of old Nortek, or an even more obscure artist, Tristy Nesh Juri Paik. That’s a mouthful! The track features edgy and glitchy elements that transcend most genre based labels, and it’s hard to categorize it. The heavily filtered vocals add a new dimension and are used to accompany the tooth grinding synth saw melody. Gah, I should really stop rambling and let you get to it.

This version takes the original and adds a tribal overtone, while the original messed up vocals are still present giving it an in your face presence. It isn’t until the 80 second mark that the bassline drops in, and well, the easiest way to describe, though I despise the term, is wobbly. Gah. The end of this review for me…
Happy Hands And Happy Feet (Alex Gopher Remix)

Alex’s remix has the best intro to date, it’s just the filtered rolling percussion type element paired with what might be a synth….but it’s crisp and ear catching. This remix removes most of the vocals and simply uses a vocal sample (‘beat….’), a welcome change. The entire track has incredible amounts of layering…percussion on basslines on synths on filters on kicks and double it all over. The only major drawback for this remix is it’s length. Sadly it’s only 4 minutes and 30 seconds long. Boo.
Happy Hands And Happy Feet (Moonbootica Remix)

Another slightly different take on the 12″ version, Moonbotica’s remix reminds a little much of the original, except that there’s some heavy breakbeat elements (especially in the breakdown) and he’s employing tons of new sidechained melodies. Overall, this is probably the most coherent remix and would like appeal to a larger crowd than most others.
Happy Hands And Happy Feet (Phatzoo Remix)

The man himself gives his production a work over. Though it’s labeled Phatzoo Remix, it should probably simply be labeled Extended Mix as it’s strikingly similar to the 12″ cut, but makes it DJ friendly this time around.
My nod for best remix goes to the entire package. Seriously….well, not quite, but there isn’t a dull moment in this entire EP. Each remix is still Electro at heart and well, that’s just fine by my books. I’ll give the Phatzoo remix my nod as I’m still very partial to the original 12″ cut.
Score: 10/10
