r-1701363-1237902043Nick Murray’s a newcomer to the scene, with his first release in 2008, and seeing a rather interesting remix of Kanye West’s ‘Love Lockdown’ featured on a whitelabel pressing alongside a bootleg Tiesto Remix.  Weird.

His first release of 2009 can be found on Nemesis, a Banshee Worx sublabel, which in turn is related to Bonzai Music. I’ve had a chance to sample the previous work on Nemesis, and I have to say this latest is a huge step in the right direction for the label.

Along with Nick on this release are two staples of the trance scene from the 2004 era, Corderoy and Cor Fijneman.  Along for the ride is rising star System K, which sadly, wasn’t included in the release pack I received.

Read on for my full take on this trancer and be sure to sample the tracks so you can vote for your favorite!

The track kicks off with a tinny sounding kick layered on the basic bassline. The track’s overall sound isn’t groundbreaking in any way, however, it’s soft melody stands out as it’s best quality. If you’ve followed any of my previous reviews you’ll have noted that I’m a sucker for piano based melodies, and Nick incorporates a sidechained piano based melody.  It’s evident that he concentrated on a melody that was pleasing, simple and infectious…and the work paid off.  The track is effective, but it doesn’t wow in any one area, but frankly, that’s quite fine.  This is summer patio trance in a neat 8 minute package.

Dale and Chris Corderoy burst onto the scene in 2003 with their smash hit ‘Sweetest Dreams’, which was championed by Ferry Corsten, and later remixed by the legend himself. Since then the boys have been busy with the Mondo brand alongside Darren Tate.  This remix takes the original and removes the slightly deep and progressive tones and replaces them with a more euphoric and upbeat edge that is clearly reminiscent of Corderoy’s sound, old and new. 2 minutes in and we’re privy to their genius as they introduce lush pads and a haunting vocal sample in what is the breakdown of the track, and I’m instantly swept away to my early clubbing days, reaching for the lasers as Ferry pumps out the euphoric sound he pioneered (and sadly, has all but left behind…).  This remix is epic, but not in the same manner as say, Ron Malakai’s latest ‘The Last Bastion’.  It’s understated and seems to catch the listener off guard. This my friends, is exactly why I fell in love with trance in the early 00s…

We’ve not had a chance to review any of Cor’s previous work on MusiCritics, but let’s change that, right now.  His remix, which reminds me a lot of his ‘Jaguar’ production is slightly techier in sound, but maintains the original progressive vibe of the original and jacks the tempo up a bit. The track moves well from the start, all the way into the breakdown. The breakdown is a little irritating (that strange high pitched bell would be best if completely removed), but as the build comes in and we crash, I quickly forget it and find myself grooving along.

This, in my opinion, is probably Nemesis’ best release to date.  The original mix is a wonderful platform piece, and should be made available for remix by other heavy hitters.  As far as my favorite, it’s no question I’m in love with the Corderoy remix, and for that, it gets my vote!

Score: 7.5/10
