Sancho & Native ft Ani – Creekbed [Swordtail Records]
The latest offering from the Aussie record label Swordtail Records is a clear indication that spring has sprung and it’s time to enjoy the much needed sun. (If it’s still dark and grey in your neck of the woods, fear not, the sunny days will soon arrive!)
Creekbed is a sultry little number that showcases a smooth bass guitar melody, not something I hear very often, and the mellow vocals of Ani. Along with the original are 3 remixes: a vocal-less Dub mix and two Edel remixes, a Summer and Instrumental mix.

This is my first time hearing a production from this duo, and judging by Sancho’s 2007 release on Swordtail, he’s a favorite of the label’s. However, Sancho’s definitely not a newcomer, with releases dating as far back as 2005, he’s been featured on some quality labels. Labels such as Fiberline Audio, Bellarine, Proton and Pure Substance. This track is simply beautiful. There’s no emphasis on any one component, but all elements come together to create an amazing whole. The track isn’t deep enough to warrant a deep house title, but it definitely borrows the standard funk and string based melodies. Thanks to the latin sounding melody and Ani’s soft voice, the track whisps the listener away to an exotic place, if only for a few minutes, and before you know it, the trip is over and you’re still sitting at your desk. Sigh.

This mix takes the original version and strips away the vocal track provided by Ani. I’d say the two tracks are still very similar, both maintain that funky house vibe, but having heard the original first, it’s obvious something is missing. Take a peek at this one if you weren’t feeling her voice.

Edel, who’s another relative newcomer to the progressive house scene, takes the original and adds a deeper bassline with a stronger kick to turn the funky house number into a progressive house tune. That’s pretty much where the differences end, except for the breakdown, which has been revamped and given a new life. The breakdown is definitely the highlight of this remix (which includes Ani’s filtered voice, a nice touch!), and though it’s labeled as a Summer Mix, I’m having a hard time defining exactly why.

Much like his Summer Mix, except this time he’s toned back some of the filtered effects throughout and removed Ani’s vocal track he had originally included in the breakdown.
Score: 7.5/10
