Mat Zo – Aurus / The Price Of Oil [Soundpiercing]
Mat Zo…Awesome producer! This EP dropped, and I almost missed it; it happened to be released right around the time his Lucky Strike EP was released on Anjunabeats, the likes of which dominated the trance charts (and still is!), leaving this EP without some lovin’. So here we are. We’ve got Aurus, and The Price Of Oil. Let’s go!

This one fills out pretty quickly, as per Mat’s (or should it be Matan’s? We’ll go with Mat’s, heh), and kicks into a lovely groove. The pad in the back has a vintage sounding note progression to it. A rather exotic vocal cut drops in shortly before we start building down for a break. Everything fades out slowly and smoothly to allow this big, lovely pad to cue in. Our melody filters through, a big ostentatious house-style sound that would be at home in, say, a Daft Punk production. Drop in a kick under that, fade it out, fade in some percs, splash in some silence, and you have a build. The lead lets the backing track get going, before morphing back into its true form, and then seeing us out.

This one starts out with some rather bouncy percussion, the sort of which you might see in a High Contrast track. A very subtle bass drops in to back the incoming synths. A bit of electric build, and we hear some vocal cuts…Oh, this is our break! A distinctly Arabic feel is cued in, between the male and female vocal cuts, and the percussion. It’s a deep, and great, groove that backs the string pads that ooze in. Our build breaks into just drums, requiring some rebuild, this time around our string pads, and vocal cuts. Those strings get a last bit of spotlight before the transition.
Two very different tracks here. On one side you get a vintage-sounding peak-timer, and on the other, a deep, tech-house number. I think I’m going to pick Aurus as my favorite though…Though I much prefer the vibe of The Price Of Oil, I just love the energy put forth by Aurus. 9.5/10!
