Topher Jones – Different Parts [Black Hole Recordings]
Topher’s latest effort on Black Hole Recordings is forthcoming, hopefully very soon, and it’s no wonder Black Hole’s snagged it up. Topher’s been on a rampage lately, with 9 separate original productions/releases in ‘08, 2009 is shaping up to be quite the banner year for this up and comer!
The original takes a slight departure from Topher’s older sound, and I’d say he’s starting to combine some heavy tech elements (a la Jonas Steur) in his sound as of late. Dark and broody, the original provides an excellent base for the two remixes that are included in this release. Topher re-visits his own production and provides an intro friendly version that, although similar, is varied enough to warrant its inclusion. Capping off the release is Australia’s hottest import at the moment, tyDi, aka Tyson Diorr. His remix is decidedly more trancey, but it keeps the edge of the original to build it into a floor monster.

This little ditty is incredibly infectious from the get-go and it carries so much energy, well into the first half of the track. It’s definitely progressive trance, but as I mentioned earlier, Topher’s been taking some cues from Jonas (I’d say) and he’s added some bleepy and glitchy sounds to the mix, creating a song that transcends any single genre. The breakdown is ear catching and as the break arrives, you’re teased into an even higher state until BAM, you’re flying after the crash. A tasty number through and through that I’d highly recommend to just about anyone.

Unlike the original mix, this track forgoes the heavy bassline from the start, and instead Topher plays around with a driving kick, a few snares and some unrecognizable high hat/bell sounds to carry the track past the 1st minute. Most of the track is rather similar to the original, but he’s made the lead melody a little more playful, mellowed out the low end and removed the breakdown.

If you haven’t heard this lad’s name as of late, you’re about to fall in love with his sound. Voted as Australia’s #1 DJ in 2008, tyDi’s been tearing it up with remixes that have been canned by Ferry Corsten, Armin van Buuren, Tiesto and just about every other trance DJ worldwide (Guilty as charged!). This remix is faster, and with less emphasis on the bassline and more on the kick, it carries a boatload of energy. Highlighting the track is his use of a saw based synth to drive the track into a mini breakdown at the 2 minute marker. Clearly geared towards the club, you’ll hear the standard use of echo/reverb placed on electro influenced instruments to give it that 2008 electro-trance sound that was largely popular around the world. Bonus points for the string based melody he made use of in his breakdown!
I had nearly no expectations when this landed in my inbox, but I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. Each mix stands on its own, but I’ll have to give my nod to tyDi’s version, I simply can’t get enough of the saw synth he made use of.
Score: 8/10
