I wish I knew how this release managed to slip by me, but somehow it’s been sitting on my desk since the fall of ‘08.  I ought to be punished for that. Orjan, or to some, Orjan Nilsen, DJ Governor, pops out his latest effort on the Intuition Recordings label, and what a stormer these are!

Orjan’s had a string of hits, most prominently ‘La Guitarra’, which was whored by just about every DJ the world has ever seen, and I’m also guilty as charged.  He has this ability to make memorable music, music you simply have to put on repeat, day after day. This release takes the ‘in-your-face-ness’ of ‘La Guitarra’ and tones it down to create a release that is more suitable for a peak party hour.

Read on to find out more about ‘Villa Blanca’ and ‘Soulflayer’.  I’ve even included some high quality samples!

Kicks, gurgles, hats and snaps abound right off the start. This track smells of Orjan, and certainly bears his typical sound as of late.  This track would certainly fit well at the start of say, an Armin van Buuren set. Deep and dark, the track makes use of hats, sweeps and synths to accentuate the energy level as it progresses. The breakdown highlights a synth based melody that echoes against a soft drumroll. The crash arrives, with little fanfare, and the track continues edging along. A soft and deep progressive trancer, this track radiates emotion, from the simple gurgles to the soft drumroll in the breakdown.

Decidedly fast from the start, the track doesn’t kick you in the gut.  Well, not immediately at least.  The rolling bassline is well crafted, with a smooth attack and decay that remind me of an older Mark Norman type sound. The track comes into itself after the first minute, and definitely stands up against old Norman, or even Stephen J Kroos productions. Nothing seems out of place, and though it’s busy, no single sound/instrument is impeding on another.  As the B-side, Orjan’s decided to bring it all to the table, and he’s managed to craft a piece of music that can kick any experienced dancer to the floor.  This is without a doubt peak time trance!

Soulflayer carries so much energy that I simply have to pick it as the stand out track on this release.
