van Riel and Huinink – Sunrise [Black Hole]
Up next is a collaborative sequel between the auspicious Sied van Riel and the scene veteran Geert Huinink…Sunrise. A follow-up to their first work, Minimal Symphony, this one should be quality…I wasn’t that huge a fan of their first work, admittedly
. That being said, on remix duty is none other than the beast known as Topher Jones, whose work has varying degrees of edge, but a consistent degree of awesome. Let us see what these guys have cooked up for us!

This one punches out an establishing beat…To establish the track, of course. Synth pads make an early entry to create a lovely subtle atmosphere, before a funky bassline hits the scene, sounding not like a synthesized, but of a traditional electric bass. Rhythm guitar echoes in, and we can tell that this collaboration will indeed feature Huinink’s guitar skills. The track chugs along until a sweep brings forth a break, and a sublime Spanish guitar solo, accompanied by violin and rhythm guitar…Drums pierce the break, bringing the groove back. The build is in congruence with the track; subtle, and gradual. Rhythm stabs kick in to accompany the new-found guitar through to the transition.
Topher Jones Remix

The Topher Jones remix cranks up the BPM and starts out a standard transition, with the building of drums, and such. A tubular synth drops in along with a beefy riff, both of which are rather electro-like. Stabs replace the early pads of the original. The break drops in, and the original’s strings are brought into the foreground being used to create an eerie melody. Jones does not ignore those guitar stems though, eventually introducing them within the break. A bit of synth and a sweep push the pretty strings aside to make room for a beastly arp to build us back into the track, which then rolls forward into the transition in slammin’ style.
Ah, now I find this one much better than Minimal Symphony! I think Sied’s sound has matured a little bit since then, and it’s really showing in his works…Moreover, Huinink got to show off that guitar(Or at least I think that was him, oh well). Both mixes are great, with the original being a good warm-up, and Topher’s remix being a slammer. 8.5/10!

A pretty decent release imho, the Topher Jones remix is the pick of the litter in this case. Love the string based melody in both, so very balearic.
One thing caught me off guard though, why the seashell on a beach for a cover? The track is clearly labeled as ‘Sunrise’…
