Hatiras – 4 Track Variety Pack [BlowMedia]

Hatiras have been pumping out some amazingly funky Toronto house for years now, and their latest releases on ‘BlowMedia’ have been absolutely stellar and there is no doubt in my mind that their stuff went down HUGE in WMC this past week (can anyone confirm my suspicions?) We’ve decided to kind of do a pot-pourri of Blowmedia Releases in this review, packing 4 tight tracks into one!

The first track in the pack is titled ‘Donkey Punch’, produced by Hatiras and Jelo (yay for Toronto!) and provides a club worthy floor destroyer with bleepy synth stabs and a killer bassline. The second and third track are two remixes of a Danny Nagels, Jeoy Seminara & Flipside track, titled ‘Just The Tip’, and Hatiras does the remix duties by providing a vocal remix and a fully instrumental remix. Another floor destroying weapon that I’m sure is currently making the rounds in clubs!

The last track in this review comes from Hatiras, titled ‘Quite Simple Really’, and is a slightly dubbed down tech house tune that creates an eery and dreamy atmosphere to drive energy. Read on past the break for the full review and samples for each track! We’ve even included some download links!

Ready Fire Aim’s debut Artist Album: This Changes Nothing [Expansion Team Records]

Yet another stellar CD found its way into my hands and I simply couldn’t let it slip by, not when it’s this good! Ready Fire Aim is the product of singer, poet, author, actor and political commentator Sage Rader and famed DJ/ producer Shaun Morris (Known in drum n bass circles as Stakka). Sage studied violin performance at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, under the tutelage of Stephen Clapp, now the Dean of the School of Music at Julliard and is often referred to as the ‘Michael Moore of Poetry’. Shaun ‘Stakka’ Morris grew up in Brighton, England, and has since become one of the more prolific names on the global drum n bass scene.

As for the album, there are strong parallels to artists like Depeche Mode (the opening track oozes), Nine Inch Nails (into the latter half of the album) and The Postal Service (the vocals are at times eerily similar). The first half is certainly my most enjoyed section, and certainly showed great promise for what was to come, but I felt the last half kind of let me down. Still an amazing CD, with highlights in ‘End of Over’, ‘Beautiful Thing’, ‘As If It Were That Easy’ and ‘So Fine’.

Oscar G – Innov8 [Nervous Records]

Oscar G’s debut Album on Nervous Records, through a wondrous act of serendipity, managed to find its way into my mailbox……and who was I to ignore it? I discovered Oscar G years ago, when I made the connection between him and Murk, a production act that has never been rivalled in progressive tribal house. Regardless, this debut album easily and well surpassed all my expectations as the album travels through sexy, steamy, groovy and down right dirty in the hour spent listening to the 9 track continuous DJ mix.

With vocals from Greg ‘Stryke’ Chin (Adrenalin & Hooj) and Anne Lise Nicole, Oscar makes proper use of vocals to highlight key moments in the mix. What is likely the most striking element in the album is the fact Oscar created a flawless DJ mix with 9 original tracks! A testament to his raw skill and ability.

Ashley Wallbridge – Addiction/Forget Life [4Play Trax]

Ever since bursting onto the scene, Amplified Digital have been trailblazing and proving that young guns CAN dance with the heavyweights. This latest release continues on much the same path as previous releases, a pumping techno track with heavy trance influences that will rock your socks off.

To be quite frank, I know very little about DJ Kristoff, and his personal website leaves much to be desired, but his debut EP on Amplified Digital (who also seem to suffer from website updating issues) is sure to whip up a frenzy in clubs worldwide. The A Side provides the original mix, with everything well balanced, providing insane amounts of energy. On the B Side, we’re treated to a slightly dirtier, grittier version which highlights a thunderous rolling bassline. Think Mark Sherry or Dr Willis.

Both tracks are top quality and I see them easily fitting into an Eddie Halliwell / Sander van Doorn set, late in the night. Read on past the break for my full review, samples and download links.
